PUBG M249 After the Nerf: Recoil, Positioning, and When to Use It

KUKJIN LEE·October 28, 2026

PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS The M249 is a light machine gun worth choosing even after the nerfs. However, the important thing is not to shoot for a long time, but to stay first and create a situation where you can utilize continuous shooting. It has the advantage of being able to fire a lot of bullets in succession, but aim switching is slow and the recoil control effect based on posture is less effective than before.

To understand the recent changes in M249, we need to look at the strengthening and subsequent adjustments together. After improving the recoil and reloading, the usability of the light machine gun increased, and the shooting and aiming speeds for each position, which had been too stable, were readjusted. So, if you think that you can easily hit at all distances just by looking at the impressive shooting shots of the past, your judgment may be wrong in real life.

What changed for the M249?

The starting point was the light-machine-gun rebalance in update 42.3. Reload time fell by about 25% and maximum horizontal recoil by 30%, while the sharp initial vertical-recoil spike was reduced. These were changes relative to the prior version; they do not mean current recoil is 30% lower in every situation.

The reason this change is important is because it also addresses the weaknesses of light machine guns. Even if you can fire bullets for a long time, if it is difficult to control the first few shots and reloading is burdensome, it is not easy to take advantage of that advantage safely. As initial recoil and reloading have improved, opportunities to utilize sustained firepower have expanded.

In update 43.1, the time to switch to aimed shooting increased from 0.30 seconds to 0.37 seconds. M249 has reduced recoil control effectiveness in sitting position by 17% and effectiveness in prone position by 27%. The damage multiplier for vehicles was lowered from 1.1x to 1.0x, and the amount of world spawns was also reduced by 30%.

The point to note here is that saying ‘the recoil control effect was reduced by 17%’ and ‘total recoil increased by 17%’ are not the same. The development team explained that they adjusted the recoil control effect according to posture while maintaining the basic recoil value and pattern. In other words, rather than saying that reinforcement has disappeared entirely, it is closer to a reduction in the benefits gained from a stable posture.

The value of sustained fire and a large magazine

The biggest reason to choose the M249 is that once you start shooting, the firepower can be maintained for a long time. In situations where the opponent hides behind a tree and then comes back out, or in situations where multiple people use the same cover, continuous pressure can be more helpful than short burst attacks.

In squads, this advantage is especially connected to the division of roles. One person can control the opponent's movement path, giving the other team member time to reposition or save an injured teammate. Of course, just using a lot of bullets doesn't mean you can tie up your opponent. It becomes meaningful when you look at the angle from which the opponent's movements are visible, the positions of team members, the remaining bullets, and the next cover.

Continuous shooting can also be a useful option when dealing with vehicles. However, since the additional vehicle damage multiplier has been removed, vehicle destruction should not be calculated based on the higher multiplier as in the past. While shooting for a long time at a fast passing vehicle, you must also consider the possibility of being attacked from another direction.

When crouching or going prone helps

Changing the posture is a means of stabilizing the M249's firing rate, but it is not a matter of deciding based on just the recoil. The sitting position allows you to keep aiming while lowering your body compared to standing, and is good for when you want to pause and fire from behind cover. On the other hand, if you have to move suddenly or are attacked from the side, it would be better not to be obsessed with maintaining a low posture.

Going prone is worth considering when you have already secured a firing position and opponents cannot immediately pressure it. The lower profile comes with drawbacks: terrain may obstruct your view, and turning or moving quickly becomes harder. In the late game, as the Blue Zone closes, focusing on one direction can leave your flank exposed.

The important thing is not to take it as ‘if you lie down, there will be no recoil’. Since the recoil control effect of the prone position has been reduced in 43.1, it is better to check it directly in the current settings rather than relying only on the feeling after enhancement or old strategies. Even in the same posture, the movement felt on the screen may vary depending on the distance, scope magnification, and shooting time.

Prepare earlier for slower ADS

The difference in aim changeover time of 0.07 seconds is small in numbers, but it may delay preparation for launch in close-range engagements where the two suddenly encounter each other. However, this does not mean that it will necessarily lose to other guns in all situations. The results will vary depending on the distance from the opponent, whether they were already aiming, and who discovered it first.

When using M249, it is worth paying attention to the situation where you first look at the direction in which the opponent will come out and wait, rather than the moment you open the door and enter. You can see where the enemy will come up from under the ridge, or check the cover your team members are engaged in. Having the time to aim first can reduce the burden of slow transition speeds and take advantage of sustained fire.

Conversely, if you need to quickly turn a corner in a narrow building or check multiple directions in succession, you can consider a secondary weapon that is easy to respond to quickly. Rather than determining which weapon is better, it is important to choose a combination that suits the role you often play and the distance of the battle. Whether to give up long-distance response measures or prioritize close-range response depends on the team composition.

Choosing between the M249 and RPD

Text introducing the choice of RPD light machine gun and M249

Both are light machine guns aimed at continuous fire, but the ammunition type and emphasis are different. The RPD uses 7.62mm ammo, and its official description describes it as having high single-shot damage and easy-to-control recoil. The M249 uses 5.56mm bullets, and its advantages include a high rate of fire and fast bullet velocity compared to the RPD.

When choosing, think about the method of engagement before just the number. Your preference may vary depending on whether you feel comfortable tracking and pressing a moving opponent with rapid fire, or whether you place more emphasis on the power of a single shot and the sense of recoil. Fast bullet speed is an advantage that can be used as a reference when aiming at moving enemies, but it does not replace aiming considering distance and direction of movement.

For both, the world spawn amount has decreased from 43.1, so it is difficult to plan a farming route based on the premise of obtaining the weapon you want. It is more realistic to choose flexibly according to the weapons and ammunition you find and the gear of your teammates. It is a good idea to check the number of bullets and attachment configuration according to the actual gear you have acquired.

Practice useful hits, not just long sprays

Rather than emptying the magazine completely on a distant target from the start, watch how the crosshairs move at close range. This is a method of comparing the degree to which you can stably control the target by standing, sitting, and lying down at the same target. Increasing the distance afterwards will help you find a shooting distance that suits your hand.

At this time, what we are looking at is not the record of the longest shot, but how long the bullets that hit the target are maintained. If the bullets start to deviate significantly from the target, it may be better to stop shooting for a moment and re-aim rather than continuing to fire. A high magnification scope makes it easier to see enemies far away, but movement on the screen may feel larger, so try comparing it with a lower magnification scope.

In actual combat, you must not only look at the target, but also plan your movements after shooting. Even if you have bullets left, if your opponent is out of sight, there is no reason to keep shooting while your position is exposed. Even though reloading has been improved, it is still difficult to respond, so it is best to secure safety behind cover and see if you can switch with your teammates.

Who the M249 suits

M249 is well suited to playing by establishing a position first and controlling the opponent's movements, or dividing angles with teammates and continuously applying pressure. On the other hand, if quick aim switching and frequent position changes are most important to you, other weapons may be more convenient. The selection criteria is not so much whether it is a strong weapon as how often I create situations where I can bring out that strength.

The same criteria are valid when evaluating the M249 after the nerf. Stability due to stance is reduced and aiming is slower, but the benefits of sustained firepower and an improved default recoil pattern are not lost. If you find a combination of the distance you can hit and a safe place to shoot, more ammo is not just a number, but a resource that expands your team's options.
