Choosing a comp on Patch 18.4 starts with a decision: do your early units and items support reroll, or can you preserve HP while leveling? Low-cost lines such as Akali–Camille, Veigar, and Kayle spend gold differently from boards transitioning into Aphelios–Nidalee or Ahri–Morgana.
Patch 18.4 shifts some power from traits into units and broadens low-cost options. Camille and Kayle are buffed, Veigar is nerfed, Juggernaut loses Durability, and Nidalee’s AD and AP forms move in different directions. Reassess your core upgrades and frontline rather than automatically replaying your previous-patch comp.
Look at your resources before choosing a comp name. Compare these routes to narrow the options around your units and items.
| Current Position | Route to Consider | Before Spending Gold |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple copies of the same low-cost units | Akali–Camille, Veigar, Kayle, or another reroll line | Check items, contesting, and frontline upgrades |
| Natural 3-cost carry and tank copies | Kha’Zix, Azir, or another 3-cost reroll line | Count missing copies and remaining HP |
| Strong early board and healthy economy | Aphelios–Nidalee or Ahri–Morgana leveling lines | Plan item transfers and transition timing |
| Main carry and tank are reliably upgraded | Higher-level board improvements | Know what you will add and how much gold remains |
Patch 18.4 Reroll Options and Entry Signals

Reroll invests in shop refreshes to collect copies and gain strength through star upgrades. The core unit’s cost determines where you tend to stay and when you spend. Committing to the best-supported route is easier on your economy than collecting several unrelated comps at once.
Akali–Camille: Count Copies and Protect Your Melee Damage
Consider Akali–Camille when both units repeatedly appear early. Camille’s buff alone is not an opener: check your actual copies and whether the melee carry will have time to attack.
Pure damage items can leave a carry dying to focus fire. Watch whether you lack survival, frontline duration, or access to the enemy carry. Filling the missing role can change a fight more than spending the same gold on more damage.
Veigar Still Needs the Right Opener After His Nerf
If you already hold multiple Veigars and can support AP and casting, reroll remains a line to consider. Adjust expectations after the nerf, and check tank durability and how many core copies opponents hold.
Do not neglect frontline and item use while waiting for one more Veigar. Giving him time for several casts may preserve more HP immediately than another speculative roll.
Kayle: Look Beyond the Carry Copies
Consider Kayle alongside the other buffed low-cost units. Kayle alone with weak tanks is a different opener from naturally finding her supporting cast too.
Chasing several 3-stars quickly ties up bench space and gold. Finish the upgrades that change fights first, then judge secondary targets by copies and HP. A distant 3-star does not deserve the same priority as one almost finished.
Narrow Yunara, Kha’Zix, Azir, and Other Options by Items and Frontline
Other candidates include Blackthorn Yunara, Kha’Zix, Azir, Master Yi–Rengar, Defender Cassiopeia, and Search Party Caitlyn. Instead of memorizing every variant, ask who uses your items and which tank can upgrade alongside them.
With completed AP items, compare carries that can use them. Even a unit you have many copies of may be less economical if it requires rebuilding both items and frontline from scratch.
Signals to Stop Rolling or Change Direction
- More players are holding your core units, making upgrades harder.
- Repeated refreshes are not bringing the hits closer, while HP keeps falling.
- Frontline weakness, rather than carry damage, repeatedly loses fights.
- The core 3-stars are complete and a useful unit is ready for the next level.
Rolling is a way to buy the strength you need now. Once the core is complete, XP or a secondary carry may add more power than more shop refreshes.
Set 18 Leveling Comps: Prepare the Level 8 Transition

A leveling comp uses natural early upgrades to maintain strength while building economy and XP, then moves into higher-cost carries and tanks. Reaching the level is only part of the plan: you also need gold left for rolls and purchases afterward.
Aphelios–Nidalee: Plan Where the Items Go
Know your temporary item holder and final recipient. A strong upgraded holder need not leave immediately; wait until the final carry’s star level and supporting frontline make the swap worthwhile.
Nidalee’s AD and AP forms receive different 18.4 changes. Check her current form and ability description before handing over every spare item, then decide her role on this board.
Ahri–Morgana and Brambleback Boards Need a Second Job Covered
Finding the first carry does not finish an Ahri–Morgana or Brambleback–Morgana transition. After the main carry’s items, decide whether remaining components should finish a tank or strengthen secondary damage.
If fights end too quickly, inspect tanks first. If tanks hold but enemies survive, inspect damage. Replacing an upgraded tank just to activate another trait must improve actual combat, not only the trait display.
Soraka, 7 Riftbeast, and 6 Juggernaut: Check the Completion Cost
Soraka leveling boards, 7 Riftbeast, and 6 Juggernaut are options too. If key units or Emblems are missing, do not stay weak indefinitely while staring at the final comp.
With Juggernaut’s Durability nerf, activating the trait alone does not prove your frontline is sufficient. Check tank stars, defensive items, and the opponents’ main damage type.
Do Not Sell Your Whole Board Before a Transition Is Ready
A new 1-star carry without ready items may be weaker than your upgraded holder. Use this order to reduce the chance of a sharp power drop:
- Secure the receiving carry and the tanks that will support it.
- Check which items selling returns and which traits the swap removes.
- Switch when you can complete positioning and item placement within the planning phase.
- Then focus spending on the new carry and tank upgrades.
With weak economy and heavy losses, you may need to stabilize at your current level rather than force the target. If you are holding comfortably, avoid unnecessary rolls and preserve flexibility for the next stage.
Finish the Board: Late-Game Upgrades and the Level 9 Decision

Improving the board is not just adding expensive units. Fill the missing job: tanking, damage, crowd control, or utility. An expensive 1-star can weaken you if it replaces an upgraded unit or removes an essential trait.
Three Checks Before Level 9
Can the board survive the next few fights? Will you have gold left to roll and buy units? What specific problem does the added slot solve? Answer all three before spending the XP cost.
If main carry and tank upgrades are unfinished, those may come first. If the board is stable and the next unit is ready, leveling can be the better way to gain strength.
Playing for Top Four Versus Playing for First
At low HP, reducing the next loss matters more than a perfect board several rounds away. Roll for immediate upgrades, use unspent items, and reposition for the likely opponent.
With HP and economy to spare, prepare a higher-level transition or secondary carry. Keep scouting so the entire plan does not depend on one heavily contested unit.
Check Positioning and Items Before Abandoning the Comp
The same comp can fight very differently depending on enemy carry placement and your units’ targets. When losses start, check:
- Is your carry taking damage at the start of the fight?
- Does the carry attack freely while your tanks hold?
- Are usable items stuck on the bench or a unit you plan to replace?
- Are you failing to kill frontline, or failing to threaten the backline?
FAQ: Can I Repeat One Comp on Patch 18.4?
A familiar comp is a reasonable way to practice economy and positioning. Also learn another line that shares its items for games where you are contested or the opener does not fit.
Should I Avoid Veigar Reroll Because He Was Nerfed?
A nerf does not invalidate every opener. Compare your copies, items, and contesting. Abandoning a well-supported line for a poorly prepared alternative has a cost too.
Is Level 8 or Level 9 More Important?
Board completion comes first. If your core is weak and HP is falling fast, spend on upgrades. Consider the next level when the board is stable and you can still buy units afterward.
Patch 18.4 comp selection begins with units, items, and contesting. For reroll, focus gold on core upgrades. For leveling, manage HP and transition costs together. Even after choosing the final comp, keep filling the roles your actual fights show are missing.
