Shadow Zekrom Guide: Giovanni, Super Rocket Radar, and Frustration

KUKJIN LEE·October 14, 2026

For Shadow Zekrom, check your Super Rocket Radar, Giovanni’s current encounter, and the moves you will need afterward. A capture still needs usable attacks and resources before becoming a raid team member.

This guide covers the original acquisition route, Giovanni preparation, and investment decisions after appraisal.

The Harvest Festival takeover that introduced Shadow Zekrom and its Frustration-removal window have ended. Check the current Giovanni reward and the next official removal window separately. Dates below describe the original event.

Original Event and Acquisition Route

The takeover featured Shadow Zekrom as Giovanni’s reward. Its route used GO Pass progress for a Super Rocket Radar, defeating Giovanni, and then catching the reward Pokémon.

Do not equate the event end with a guaranteed reward-rotation date. Before using a radar, check which Shadow Pokémon Giovanni currently awards.

Rocket Radar Versus Super Rocket Radar

The ordinary Rocket Radar locates Arlo, Cliff, and Sierra. Giovanni requires a Super Rocket Radar.

Building the ordinary item from repeated Grunt battles does not by itself unlock Giovanni. Read its actual inventory name.

Finding Giovanni

Equip the Super Rocket Radar and investigate indicated PokéStops. Planning nearby checks can reduce unnecessary travel.

Older guides can describe different encounter methods. The source cites the June 2026 change, and the October announcement also explicitly places Giovanni only at PokéStops. Waiting only for balloons is not the route described here.

Was Deluxe Mandatory?

The original Harvest Festival free GO Pass included a Super Rocket Radar. Deluxe added another reward route but was not necessary for a first attempt.

That pass’s progress and claim windows are over. Its former Deluxe rewards are not evidence of a currently purchasable offer. Compare free and paid tracks and deadlines in any later pass.

Giovanni: Remove Shields and Adapt to the Actual Team

Opening shield pressure against Giovanni

Assign jobs instead of choosing only the highest CP. Prepare a Fighting-type response to Persian and a way to spend Giovanni’s two shields early.

Think in three stages:

  • Opening Pokémon: Use a moveset that reaches Charged Attacks quickly to draw shields. Machamp is one candidate; your individual’s level and moves still matter.
  • Middle matchup: Check Giovanni’s actual second Pokémon and adjust after an unsuccessful attempt. Identify where health is lost rather than repeating an unchanged team.
  • Zekrom matchup: If Zekrom is present, Ground, Ice, Dragon, and Fairy attacks exploit its Dragon/Electric typing. Also consider resistance to its own moves.

If Persian defeats your opener too quickly, changing only the final team member will not solve the opening. Improve survival and shield pressure there first.

If the early stages work but Zekrom stops the run, review the final attacker’s moves and level. Change the failing section rather than every team member at once.

Appraisal: More Than CP and Stars

Checking Shadow Zekrom IVs, moves, and resources before investment

A perfect appraisal is appealing, but investment should also consider Attack IV, moves, level, and the role you need.

Someone else’s catch CP or personal verdict is not a complete investment rule. Compare the actual Pokémon with your team.

What to Check After Appraisal

CheckQuestion
Attack IVWhich owned Zekrom deserves priority?
MovesIs Frustration present, and is the moveset usable for the role?
ResourcesHow much Candy and Stardust can you commit?
Existing Electric teamWhat does this add before other investments?
PurposeRaids, collection, or GO Battle League?

Collecting a perfect individual and choosing a usable attacker are different goals. You can keep a favorite and wait until moves are available before investing.

Remove Frustration With a Charged TM During an Allowed Window

Checking an officially enabled Frustration-removal window

Shadow Pokémon normally arrive with Frustration. Ordinary TMs cannot replace it outside a specifically enabled event window.

The original takeover enabled Charged TMs to remove it. That does not mean the same bonus applies today.

At the next opportunity:

  1. Check the official bonus and cutoff.
  2. Find intended upgrade candidates with Frustration.
  3. Confirm the individual before using the Charged TM.
  4. Read the resulting move before putting it in a team.

Removing Frustration and obtaining your intended attack are separate steps. Some attacks require an additional event or Elite TM; a named move is not automatically available through an ordinary TM.

Purification Depends on Your Goal

Shadow Pokémon deal more damage but also take more, with higher upgrade and second-Charged-Attack costs. Purification changes appraisal and costs and replaces Frustration with Return.

If you wanted a Shadow raid attacker, choose the role before purifying. Better appraisal numbers and retaining the Shadow damage bonus are different objectives.

Compare Shadow Zekrom with an incomplete Electric team, accounting for target weaknesses, boss moves, and level. Ask whether it fills an actual slot in your current team before committing resources.

FAQ

What If I Missed the Frustration Window?

Keep candidates tagged, favorited, or clearly named and wait for a future officially enabled window.

Should I Transfer a Low-IV One Immediately?

Consider your collection and future availability. If it is your only one, keep it until you can compare rather than rushing to transfer.

Does Owning Regular Zekrom Mean I Must Also Upgrade the Shadow?

No. Assess a coming battle, missing Electric coverage, and resources. Keeping it as a collectible is also valid.

Check the Radar and Moves Before Committing

The route extends beyond beating Giovanni: verify the reward, prepare shield pressure, and assess the capture’s moves and costs.

If already caught, sort Frustration and upgrade candidates. If preparing a new attempt, begin with your Super Rocket Radar and Giovanni’s current reward.

Regional and version notes

This localization uses English Pokémon, move, and item names. Global schedules marked local time follow your play location; Korea-only events use KST and the Sendai event uses JST. Ended events are historical, not renewed reward offers. Tactical recommendations and upgrade priorities are editorial guidance, not guaranteed wins or live performance rankings. The original takeover and Frustration window are over. Confirm the current Giovanni reward separately. The official event places Giovanni at PokéStops. Shadow and Purified Pokémon cannot fuse; obtaining Shadow Zekrom does not provide a Kyurem-fusion candidate. Some illustrations are retained from the Korean edition and may include Korean labels.
