Stardust and Candy XL are limited in Pokémon GO. Taking every strong catch straight to maximum level can leave too little for the raid or Max Battle team you actually need.
Ordinary, Shadow, Dynamax, and Gigantamax individuals have different uses. Consider raid roles, Max Battle eligibility, and whether one investment can cover multiple types.
This guide presents the source's type-by-type long-term shortlist for new and returning Trainers. It is a planning framework, not a current measured tier list or a requirement to reach level 50 before participating.
Before Committing to Level 50
Identify the Raid or Max Battle Role
Pokémon GO's battle activities include raids, Max Battles, and GO Battle League.
Raids and Max Battles provide encounter opportunities, while GO Battle League also has format limits and changing balance. A PvP candidate should only be powered to the level its intended format needs; maxing it can make it ineligible for a capped league.
With limited resources, ask these questions first:
- Does it fill a raid attacking role you actually need?
- Is this individual eligible for the Max Battles you intend to enter?
- Can suitable moves give it more than one useful attacking role?
- Does it also fit an intended GO Battle League format?
- Can you realistically collect its Candy and Candy XL?
Check Attack IVs Without Waiting Forever for a Hundo
Perfect IVs are a desirable long-term target, but you do not have to postpone every usable build until a 100% individual appears.
A high Attack IV can matter to damage breakpoints. Still, species, moves, and level matter too. Compare similar candidates and their actual roles before spending a large Candy XL stock.
You Do Not Need Several Level-50 Copies Immediately
For scarce Candy XL, covering needed roles with one strong project at a time can be more practical than maxing several copies of one species.
Reviving and rejoining with a powerful attacker is one option, but it costs time and may be worse than staying in with a balanced party. Combining a key attacker with usable budget teammates avoids making repeated level-50 builds the default.
Check the Actual Individual's Max Eligibility
A species being useful in raids does not qualify every individual for Max Battles. Usually you need a Dynamax- or Gigantamax-capable individual; officially supported exceptions such as the Crowned Legendary forms have their own rules.
Where a Max-capable version is available and fits the same role, it can give a new investment more uses. Do not assume every species already has one.
Shadow Pokémon Cost More
Shadows can offer higher raid damage at the cost of durability and extra resources. They cannot simply Mega Evolve or become Dynamax by being powered up.
With limited resources, an accessible ordinary, Mega-eligible, or Max-capable project can be easier to support than an expensive Shadow build.
The Source's Broad-Use Shortlist
If you cannot build every type, prioritize projects with a clear role across the activities you actually play.
Zacian and Zamazenta: Use the Correct Forms

For the source's Steel raid and Max Battle roles, the relevant forms are Crowned Sword Zacian and Crowned Shield Zamazenta—not ordinary Hero of Many Battles individuals without the required form change. Their GO Battle League eligibility also depends on the format.
The source emphasized Crowned Shield Zamazenta's durability and Crowned Sword Zacian's offense. Building one of each was its long-term suggestion, subject to matching Energy, move, and Candy requirements.
Mega Rayquaza
The source favored Mega Rayquaza for Flying damage and a separate Dragon attacking role. Appropriate attacks and the boss matchup determine its value; neutral damage is not automatically better than exploiting a weakness.
Covering more than one useful role can make one investment worthwhile. Rayquaza still needs Dragon Ascent for Mega Evolution, even when planning a Dragon role.
Groudon and Kyogre for Primal Reversion
The source's Ground and Water raid projects were Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre. Their ordinary forms have separate GO Battle League uses; do not assume Primal Reversion is allowed in every PvP format.
Energy for the intended reversion, Candy XL, and required moves should be part of the plan before maxing either one.
Dawn Wings Necrozma
The source favored Dawn Wings Necrozma for Ghost damage against appropriate Psychic and Ghost bosses.
It shares Necrozma Candy with Dusk Mane Necrozma, so decide which fusion and role matters first when resources are tight.
White Kyurem and Black Kyurem
White Kyurem was the source's offensive Ice choice, while Black Kyurem offered another powerful raid or PvP project. Fusion requirements and the active format need separate checks.
The source noted that Black Kyurem lacks an Ice-type Fast Attack. For an Ice-doubly-weak target, a suitable Shadow Mamoswine can be worth comparing rather than judging by stats alone.
Steel-Type Projects
The source's Zacian and Zamazenta recommendations mean their Crowned forms for the stated Steel and Max roles. Hero forms do not inherit those uses automatically.
Dynamax Metagross can cover a Steel raid role and appropriate Max attacking or support duties. For a new Beldum project intended for both, check the individual is Dynamax-capable.
Dynamax Excadrill offers Ground and Steel possibilities with the right moves. Its Ground Max role may fill a different gap from Crowned Sword Zacian's Steel role.
Scizor and Magnezone were suggested budget options. Scizor can use Bug attacks; Magnezone can fill an Electric role.
Fighting-Type Projects

The source preferred Mega Lucario as a broad Fighting project, while also recognizing Mega Blaziken as an option. Current attack access and your boss matchups matter more than treating that order as permanent.
Keldeo was another non-Mega candidate in the source's assessment, but Mythical Candy can be difficult to obtain. A more accessible Mega Lucario project may be more realistic for some accounts.
Gigantamax Machamp can fill a Fighting Max role if you actually need and can support that build.
Blaziken, Conkeldurr, and Machamp were budget alternatives. Eligible traded Timburr or Machop lines can reduce the Candy cost of their trade-enabled evolution.
Flying-Type Projects
Mega Rayquaza led the source's Flying list, partly because of its separate Dragon role.
Yveltal can also use Dark attacks, and Incarnate Forme Enamorus offers a Fairy role. The source speculated about future Therian Forme move changes; that was not a confirmed release timetable or final comparison.
Honchkrow, Unfezant, and Togekiss were lower-cost suggestions. Togekiss may also have Fairy and format-specific PvP uses.
Poison-Type Projects
Poison targets Grass and Fairy, which often have other exploitable weaknesses. If your limited resources already cover those bosses, a specialized Poison team can wait.
Mega Beedrill was the source's accessible Poison option, depending on Weedle Candy, Mega Energy, and the intended moves.
Eternatus and Nihilego were stronger-investment candidates in the source's view. A missing real matchup need is a better reason to build them than filling every type checklist.
Ground-Type Projects
The source put Groudon with Primal Reversion first for raids, with the ordinary form's PvP use assessed separately.
Garchomp can offer Ground or Dragon damage even outside Mega Evolution. An available good individual and enough Candy can make it a practical project.
Dynamax Excadrill can serve appropriate raids and Max Battles. Ground is the only super-effective attack type against a pure Electric target, though dual typing can change a boss's overall weaknesses.
Therian Forme Landorus was another raid/PvP candidate. Excadrill, Rhyperior, and Mamoswine were the proposed budget alternatives.
Rock-Type Projects
Mega Diancie was the source's premium option, but Mythical Candy availability can make level 50 unrealistic or unnecessary for many accounts.
Shadow Rampardos and Shadow Rhyperior trade higher costs and lower durability for offense. Mega Tyranitar was suggested for a sturdier Rock option with a separate Dark role, using suitable attacks.
Gigalith was mentioned for Max Battles. That requires an actually eligible Dynamax-capable individual; an ordinary Gigalith does not qualify merely because the species is listed here.
Rampardos and Tyrantrum were the source's budget Rock picks.
Bug-Type Projects
Bug is another specialized role that can often wait when other effective teams already cover your bosses.
Against a target doubly weak to Bug, such as Hoopa Unbound, Mega Heracross or Mega Beedrill can have a clear purpose. Mega Scizor was another option where its Candy and Energy were easier to obtain.
Pinsir, Scizor, or usable high-level wild Bug catches can provide temporary coverage without a full Candy XL investment.
Ghost-Type Projects
The source strongly favored Dawn Wings Necrozma. Reviving and rejoining was proposed as one resource-saving tactic, but the time lost must be weighed against continuing with a full party.
Mega Gengar offers high offense and limited bulk. A Gigantamax-capable Gengar also has a Max role, but Mega and Gigantamax states do not operate simultaneously in a Max Battle.
Lunala, Blacephalon, Gholdengo, Origin Forme Giratina, and Dragapult were additional Ghost examples. Chandelure was the source's lower-cost choice.
Fire-Type Projects
Mega Blaziken can cover Fire and Fighting with suitable unlocked attacks. A planned dual-role set may let you change the Fast Attack between uses, provided all the required Charged Attacks are already available.
Mega Charizard Y was another Fire option. Compare your available individuals, Candy, Energy, and actual raid role rather than assuming both need to be maxed.
Gigantamax Charizard and Cinderace were the source's Fire Max candidates. For their ordinary raid role, check the relevant moves such as Blast Burn separately; a G-Max attack does not replace that move outside Max Battles.
Chandelure, Darmanitan, and Flareon were budget suggestions. For starter lines, a confirmed special-move evolution window can avoid an unnecessary Elite TM cost.
Water-Type Projects

The source put Primal Kyogre first and Mega Swampert as another Water Mega option. Your existing teams may change the order.
Gigantamax Inteleon was suggested for a Water Max role. Its normal raid role and Hydro Cannon access are separate from its G-Max attack.
Shadow Greninja and Shadow Swampert were separate offensive projects, not Mega versions of those Shadows. Kingler or appropriate Hydro Cannon starters could fill a budget Water role.
Grass-Type Projects
The source favored Mega Sceptile, with Kartana as a non-Mega offensive option.
Gigantamax Rillaboom can cover a Grass Max role. Check Frenzy Plant separately for its ordinary raid role rather than assuming the G-Max move applies in raids.
Shaymin and Zarude were further candidates with difficult Mythical Candy requirements. Roserade and suitable Frenzy Plant starters were lower-cost alternatives.
Electric-Type Projects
Several Electric attackers trade durability for offense, so compare damage with practical survival against your target boss.
The source considered Regieleki for offense and Zekrom for a different balance of bulk, Dragon coverage, and possible PvP use. That is a dated comparison rather than a measured current ranking.
Gigantamax Toxtricity fills an Electric Max role. If your immediate target is a Water boss and a suitable Grass team already covers it, the additional investment may be less urgent; dual typing and moves still matter.
Psychic-Type Projects
The source contrasted Shadow Mewtwo's raid offense with an ordinary Mewtwo project's broader Mega eligibility and lower resource burden. Decide the role before choosing between them.
Mega Alakazam was an alternative. A Max Battle plan requires an eligible Dynamax-capable Alakazam, not any ordinary individual.
A Dynamax-capable Latios can also have a separate Mega Latios role where supported, but it faces strong Psychic and Dragon alternatives. Max Battles still use its eligible Max state rather than Mega Evolution.
Espeon, Gallade, Gardevoir, and Exeggutor were the source's budget Psychic examples.
Ice-Type Projects
The source favored White Kyurem and also saw Black Kyurem as a long-term raid/PvP candidate. Check the intended attacks and fusion requirements.
Shadow Mamoswine can be useful against Ice-doubly-weak bosses, with Shadow costs included in the decision.
Dynamax Glaceon was the source's Ice Max project if Eevee Candy and an eligible individual were available.
Mamoswine, Weavile, Galarian Darmanitan, and Glaceon were the source's budget Ice options. Tyranitar also appeared in the original list, but it is not an Ice attacker and is excluded from that role here.
Dragon-Type Projects
Eternatus and Mega Rayquaza headed the source's Dragon discussion. Eternatus has specifically supported Max Battle rules; that is an exception to check directly, not a reason to assume all ordinary Legendaries can enter.
Dragon attacks are super effective against Dragon. A roster already covering those targets need not max several Dragon attackers just for raids; consider any separate Master League role and current rules.
White Kyurem, Black Kyurem, Origin Forme Dialga, and Origin Forme Palkia were other long-term candidates. An existing Zekrom or Reshiram can also use an appropriate Dragon set where it fits.
Dark-Type Projects
The source valued Mega Tyranitar's balance of Dark damage and durability. A shorter-lived attacker with higher theoretical damage is not automatically the better option for every group or boss.
Dark and Ghost often cover overlapping Psychic/Ghost targets. A developed Dawn Wings Necrozma can reduce the urgency of another expensive build, depending on incoming attacks and resistances.
Ordinary Tyranitar and Yveltal were suggested alternatives where already available and useful.
Fairy-Type Projects
Mega Gardevoir headed the source's Fairy list, with Incarnate Forme Enamorus as another option. The source's speculation about future Therian Forme moves should not be read as confirmed current content.
Xerneas was another possible project for Trainers who also intended to play an eligible GO Battle League format.
Gardevoir, Hatterene, Togekiss, Primarina, and Granbull were suggested alternatives. A dual raid/Max project needs an actually available Max-capable Gardevoir or Hatterene individual.
A Starting Order for New or Returning Trainers
You do not need every type at once. The source grouped its suggested projects into three categories, with your roster determining the actual order.
1. Broad-Use Core Projects
- Crowned Sword Zacian
- Crowned Shield Zamazenta
- Mega Rayquaza
- Groudon prepared for Primal Reversion
- Kyogre prepared for Primal Reversion
- Dawn Wings Necrozma
These were the author's candidates for more than one activity or role. They still need appropriate moves, access, and a real use to justify level 50.
2. Type-Focused Offensive Projects
- Mega Lucario
- White Kyurem
- Mega Tyranitar
- Mega Gardevoir
- Mega Sceptile
- Mega Diancie
These were proposed as strong or reusable options in their roles, not guaranteed permanent leaders after future balance or Mega updates.
3. Projects with Max Battle Applications
- Dynamax Metagross
- Dynamax Excadrill
- Gigantamax Machamp
- Gigantamax Gengar
- Gigantamax Charizard
- Gigantamax Inteleon
- Gigantamax Rillaboom
- Gigantamax Toxtricity
- Dynamax Glaceon
For every Max project above, confirm the actual individual's eligibility and moves before spending resources. A usable team at a lower level can be enough; maximum level is a goal to justify, not an entry requirement.
