On Set 18 Patch 18.3b, choose a comp by considering items, core copies, and contesting together. Different openers change how much gold a line needs and when it comes online. Preserve HP with your current board and find the least expensive useful power spike rather than locking a final comp immediately.
This guide covers the Patch 18.3b snapshot and its main comp-selection, rolling, and leveling decisions. Later champion and trait changes can alter priorities.
What Changed on 18.3b?

The official mid-patch update reduces Kha’Zix’s base and isolated ability damage and adjusts the Blackthorn bonus for sacrificing AP units. Some earlier balance changes are reapplied. Check the B-patch conditions rather than carrying over every conclusion from the initial 18.3 release.
A nerf does not automatically rule out a comp with natural copies and suitable items. Conversely, a strong reputation cannot compensate for an opener with neither; you may lose the HP needed to finish it.

Build the Opener Around Items and 2-Stars
Current Strength Comes Before the Final Comp
An available 2-star can win more fights than a 1-star that belongs in the final roster. Selling a strong unit only because it is temporary can cost HP before you have transition gold.
Choose a holder that uses your items and pair it with a supporting frontline. When a board fails, inspect tank stars and items as well as the carry.
Do Not Leave Items Idle Too Long
Components held indefinitely for exact best-in-slot items can leave you behind. If a completed item fits several possible lines, consider using it on a temporary holder to preserve HP.
Avoid spreading carry items without a purpose. First make one unit functional, then improve frontline survival and secondary damage.
Three Checks Before Entering a Reroll Line

How Many Core Copies Do You Hold?
Reroll builds strength through repeated copies and star upgrades. Knowing the comp name is not an entry signal; count what you hold. Starting with almost no core units can make the search expensive.
How Directly Are You Contested?
Scout benches as well as boards. Shared carry targets make upgrades harder for both players. Contesting is not an automatic surrender signal, but compare your progress with theirs.
Can the Board Survive Your Rolling Plan?
Slow rolling while keeping interest works when the board holds. Heavy losses can kill you before the upgrades arrive if you protect economy at all costs.
At low HP, with another heavy loss approaching, prioritize spending for immediate strength. With stable fights and steady core copies, you can keep rolling without exhausting the bank.
Veigar, Kha’Zix, and Azir: Applying Those Checks
For Veigar, develop his stars and frontline together. Good damage numbers do not help if the fight ends before he can cast. Identify whether damage or tanking caused the loss before choosing the next item or roll target.
For Kha’Zix, account for the B-patch damage adjustment instead of forcing the previous patch’s expectations. Separate natural copies from a heavily contested entry, then judge the strength your next spend can realistically buy.
Azir’s star level cannot solve everything either. Inspect frontline duration and enemy entry paths, then position to give him enough attack time.
Define an exit condition before rolling any of these lines. If hits stop and HP falls quickly, compare waiting for 3-star with leveling around the current 2-star board.
Leveling Comps: When to Roll and When to Buy XP

A Weak Board May Need Stars First
An extra slot can disappoint if carry and tanks are all 1-star. Consider the rolls needed for key 2-stars rather than focusing only on the level number.
A Stable Board Can Calculate the Next Level’s Value
When fights are stable and a specific added unit or trait is ready, XP can be a good investment. The objective is the resulting combat strength, not leveling for its own sake.
Finding one new carry is not a reason to sell everything. Prepare replacement frontline, item transfers, and traits first to avoid a weaker board immediately after the transition.
Give Each Spend a Purpose
Before refreshing, define the target: a tank 2-star, one carry copy, or a trait connector. That helps avoid unrelated purchases.
Once the hit stabilizes the board, stop rolling and rebuild economy when possible. Aimless refreshes consume the resources needed for late levels and pivots.
Late-Game Scouting and Positioning Checks
Positioning can change the result even with the same roster. Scout possible next opponents and check whether your carry takes early aggro and where your tanks absorb damage.
-
Check whether your carry sits in the enemy’s main attack path.
-
If frontline falls too quickly, inspect tank stars and items.
-
Against position-targeted abilities, compare grouping with spreading out.
-
Use the last fight to change one or two factors next round.
Respond to abilities and actual combat paths rather than automatically moving the carry to the opposite corner.
Set 18 Comp Guide FAQ
Can I Play a Highly Rated Comp Every Game?
You can practice one line, but poor entry conditions increase its completion cost. Learn an item-compatible alternative so you can pivot when appropriate.
Does a Reroll Comp Require Its Main Carry at 3-Star?
It is an important target for a comp designed around it. At low HP, weigh completion odds against surviving the next fight. If waiting likely kills you, find immediate strength first.
When Should I Spend All My Gold?
HP and board strength matter more than a fixed round. If a few losses could eliminate you and you have clear upgrade targets, aggressive spending has a purpose.
Can I Use an 18.3b Guide on Later Patches?
Scouting, HP management, and the roll-versus-level framework remain useful. Comp priorities and best items need a fresh patch check.
Recognizing an entry is as important as knowing the final comp. Follow current units and items, and improve the board before HP becomes critical. That makes spending decisions clearer.
